Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a very serious charge, and one that can dramatically affect your ability to drive a motor vehicle in future if you are convicted. Impaired driving is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada, and in Ontario it is also considered a violation of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. This can result in a combination of penalties that may include jail time of up to 10 years as well as suspension of your driver’s licence if you are convicted.

There are many additional charges related to impaired driving, such as refusing to provide a breath sample or refusing to comply with an order intended to determine whether or not a driver is impaired while operating a motor vehicle.

In all cases, impaired driving is a serious offence, and if someone is killed as a result of an accident caused by impaired driving it can result in a sentence of life in prison.
